Hollander and Rozanov are rivals in and out of the hockey rink… or not?

I watched the show first (and second) and then I read the book. This way I could enjoy the adventure with the actors in mind and I actually came to appreciate it even more.

Title/Izenburu: Heated Rivalry
Publish date: March 25, 2019
Argitalpen-eguna: 2019/03/25
Lenght/luzera: 372 pages/orrialde
Publisher/Argitaletxea: Carina Press

I enjoyed the tension, the build-up, the internal conflict and the new things at every turn (apart from the explicit parts), which makes this reading enjoyable and oh my so fluid.

The script is quite faithful to this book, so I didn’t miss many things. Some conversations are more developed in the show, of course, and also some characters make more frequent appearances (thank you whoever you are for giving Rozanov a friend like Svetlana!) but many conversations are exactly the same and that is a reflection of the book’s foundation being strong, in my humble opinion. Or at least, strong enough!

I love the development of the conflict, as it is not a typical enemies-to-lovers but an internal coming-out, the dread of being seen together and the “we are rivals but we love each other” conflict that only adds to the frustration.

As a language lover, I found the contrast between both characters’ situations particularly interesting (Shane speaking fluent French and English but zero Russian, and Ilya speaking Russian and struggling in English, although improving it year after year). Often, we are not fully capable of expressing what we mean in a second language, and this barrier is beautifully reflected in Ilya.

Throughout the story, months and years go by, but the story does not miss any steps and it shocked me to realise at the end that I was jealous that I might never be able to write something as emotionally meaningful as this one day.

The only thing I didn’t like about the show was a conversation between mother and son… that wasn’t in the book. It really didn’t fit in, so I must confess I was glad it was not in the source material.

Possible spoiler

The ending of the show, though, was just sweet and leaves you with a feeling of pride and satisfaction. Calm. The book goes slightly further into the story, but it’s also satisfyingly resolved.

This is the 2nd of six books, but they are not all about this couple. Nevertheless, they are somehow connected, so I’ll try to keep up with this saga. I know there is at least another book about this couple that I’m willing to read. What do you think? BTW, my bday is coming up soon! Double wink.

If you go to my IG (@iswid_books), I’ll show you my 2026 carnival costume as soon as I can. Do you want to know what it was about? Hint: read above. See you soon!

This post is dedicated to the LOVE lover Maitxuu!! (Pls, finish my cover, thx).

Special quotes (beware of vague spoilers):
  • Ilya didn’t think the NHL had an official rule about being romantically involved with a rival player, but only because the league couldn’t possibly imagine one being necessary. That’s how shocking a revelation this would be if Ilya and Shane were found out.
