Juniper Hayward eta Athena Liu idazleak elkarrekin ikasi dute eta ibilbide nahiko antzekoa izan dute unibertsitatetik euren lehen liburua argitaratu arte. Aitortu behar dut irakurketa honek sentimendu kontrajarriak sortu dizkidala. Ez dakit hype-aren erruz izan den ala agian Chiskeiken gomendio amorratuaren eraginez.

Alde absurdoena gustatu zait. Baita ere asko ikasten da idazketa prozesuari eta argitalpenaren munduari buruz. Aipamen berezia amaren euskarriari… bizitza bera bezain gordina.

Hala ere, ezin izan dut neure burua protagonistarekin edo bere ekintzekin identifikatu. Agian horregatik, faltan bota izan dut istorioan erabat murgiltzeko gaitasuna.

Kuriosoa iruditu zait nola sartzen dituen azalpen historikoak: espresuki esaten du ez dituela azalduko aspergarriak ez suertatzeko, baina hala ere hor daude. Teknika gisa desberdina iruditu zait, eta kasu batzuetarako agian gomendagarria ere bai.

Gomendatuko al nuke irakurketa hau? Bai, baina burua eta animoa narrazio mota desberdin baterako prestatuta dituzun une bat aukeratu.

Juniper Hayward y Athena Liu han estudiado juntas y son escritoras con un recorrido universitario parecido hasta la publicación de su primer libro. Pero Athena ha conseguido un estrellato que June no es capaz de vislumbrar. La cuestión es: ¿Liu ha alcanzado el éxito por ser buena escritora o por sus orígenes asiáticos? Parece que ahora la diversidad vende…

En su última celebración juntas, June es testigo de la muerte accidental de Athena y, durante el shock, la superviviente roba la última obra de Athena: un diamante en bruto al que June dedica las siguientes semanas a pulir.

La culpabilidad, los celos y la necesidad de triunfar acompañan a June en este recorrido hacia la publicación y la reinvención.

Debo admitir que esta lectura me ha generado sentimientos encontrados. No sé si por el hype, puede que acentuado por la insistente recomendación de Chiskeik, también hay que decir.

He disfrutado de la parte más absurdista y se aprende mucho sobre el proceso de escritura y el mundo de la publicación. Especial mención al apoyo maternal… tan crudo como la vida misma.

No obstante, no he podido identificarme ni con la protagonista ni con la mayoría de sus acciones, por lo que me he echado de menos ese punto de introducirme plenamente en la historia.

Me ha parecido curiosa la facilidad con la que introduce las explicaciones históricas que te indica expresamente que no quiere explicar para que no resulte aburrido. Como técnica, me ha parecido sorprendente, diferente y recomendable.

¿Recomiendo esta lectura? Sí, pero escoge un momento en el que tengas la mente y el ánimo preparados para una narrativa diferente.

Juniper Hayward and Athena Liu are young female writers with a similar college trajectory until the publication of their first book.

Athena achieved a level of stardom that June can’tt even imagine. The question is: has Liu achieved this level of success because she is a good writer or because of her Asian origins? It seems that diversity sells nowadays…

During their last encounter, June witnesses Athena’s accidental death and, during her shock, she steals Athena’s latest work: a rough diamond that June spends the following weeks polishing.

Guilt, jealousy and the need to succeed accompany June on this journey toward publication and self-realization.

I must admit that this reading surfaced mixed feelings in me. I’m not sure if it was because of the hype, perhaps intensified by Chiskeik’s persistent recommendation.

I enjoyed the more absurd side of it. You can also learn a lot about the writing process and the publishing world. Special mention to the maternal support… As raw as life itself.

However, I couldn’t identify with the protagonist or with her actions, so I missed the immersion in the story.

I found it curious how easily the authoress introduces historical explanations that she explicitly says she won’t go into so as not to make things boring. As a technique, I found it different, surprising and perhaps even recommendable.

Do I recommend this book? Yes—but choose a moment when your mind and mood are ready for a different kind of narrative.
