I cannot promise I won’t read these two books again, or that I won’t watch the TV-show again. Just love them both (read it as you wish: as individuals, couples, books, book & show…). Let’s dig into it.

Kip works in a smoothie place so he can pay his History degree student loans. That’s where he meets this awesomely handsome man who he becomes immediately smitten with. Until Kip realises that his daydreamy athletic man is none other than the superstar hockey player Scott Hunter–who can’t be into him…. nor be queer, right? No NHL player is. But Hunter keeps coming…
This is a hot spicy and explicit gay romance that will not leave you indifferent. The build-up of their relationship and the tension about the fragility of it are very well depicted, and I’ve enjoyed watching it unfold.
The story builds the good kind of emotional tension that makes you feel you’re alongside their journey to… maybe happiness? Acceptance? Unclosetedness? (Yesss, I made this word up). Buy you’ll need to read their story to discover how this ends (wink).
If you are sex shy or uncomfortable with these themes, you may not like this reading, as I said it’s explicit, highly, and repeatedly, repeatedly, repeatedly. But if you can deal with intense sexual content, the build-up of the relationship and their emotional connection is very satisfying and well resolved.
I am happy about the success of this saga. As far as I’ve read (the first two books), I like the story behind both male queer couples. I read them in the wrong order, and I’m glad I did, because I could very much enjoy Rozanov’s bluntness this way. Every time he appeared, although they were very few interactions, I felt I knew him and his own journey, as the Game Changer storyline mixes with Rozanov and Shane’s in Heated Rivalry. I really think I enjoyed this order, and I recommend it, although it takes the end’s surprise off, as it also has an impact on the second book and the TV show. However, knowing the ending didn’t make it worse, but better. While reading, I understood the work that a good relationship takes, and was rooting for them all the way.
Let me know in comments what you think about it/them!
Special quotes (beware of vague spoilers) and my own comments:
- “He was hot?” “Oh my god.” Kip grinned. “He was volcanic.” Chap. 1. Page 8.
- “He told me he was disappointed because he’d heard I was, quote, ‘good at hockey again’”. “Ouch.” “Yeah, well. He didn’t deserve a sucker punch like that.” Chap. 10. Page 108. That’s Rozanov they are talking about, of course!!! Must love him.
- (texting) Kip: I meant of Halo. Scott laughed. Scott: Fuck you. Chap. 15. Page 172. I love the humour of this full interaction.
- He was feeling really fucking low. Chap. 16. Page 185. I really feel sorry for him, need to give him a hug.
- They shook hands, and Murdock said, “ It’’s not Rozanov, is it?” “Jesus. No! Why does everyone–?” “Good. I don’t need that kind of circus.” Chap. 28. Page 297. Working for the next one, maybe?
