1990ean argitaratua, Post Mortem Kay Scarpetta saga ospetsuaren lehen atala da, 2026an Prime plataformari esker, telesail-formatuko egokitzapena lortu duena.

Telesailak lehen istorio honetan oinarritzen du bere tramaren atal bat. Istorioa Richmond hiriko medikuntza legal saileko buru den Kay Scarpetta doktorearen ahotsaren bidez kontatzen da. Lehen pertsonan idatzita, protagonista narratzailearen ikuspegitik aurkezten zaigu kontakizuna: bere esperientziek, behaketek eta bizipenek mugatutako ezagutzarekin.

Lehen orrialdetik bertatik, gauez aritzen den serie-hiltzaile baten hirugarren krimenaren eszenara eramaten gaitu zuzenean, haren biktimak itxuraz elkarren artean loturarik ez duten emakumeak direlarik.

Oro har, istorioa ondo egokitzen zaio generoari, ustiatzeko geruza asko dituen protagonista bat duena eta, kasu honetan behintzat, orrialdeetara begiak itsatsita mantenduko zaituen trama interesgarri bat garatzen duena.

Publicada en 1990, Post Mortem es la primera entrega de la famosa saga de Kay Scarpetta, que cuenta por fin con una adaptación en formato de serie, estrenada en Prime en 2026.

La serie basa parte de su trama en esta primera historia, que se cuenta desde la voz de la doctora Kay Scarpetta, jefa del departamento de Medicina Legal de la ciudad de Richmond. Contada en primera persona, nos presenta la historia desde la perspectiva de una narradora protagonista con un conocimiento limitado a sus experiencias propias, observaciones y vivencias.

Desde la primera página, nos transporta directamente a la escena del tercer crimen de un asesino en serie nocturno, cuyas víctimas son mujeres sin un vínculo aparente entre ellas.

Este arranque da una urgencia a la trama desde el principio, dejando claro el papel de una profesional comprometida con su trabajo sin renunciar a su faceta más humana.

Hacía tiempo que me apetecía leer a Cornwell y la aparición de esta serie televisiva me ha proporcionado la excusa perfecta para pasar por la biblioteca y ¡zas! llevármelo a casa…

La lectura ha sido ágil (que no rápida) gracias a una prosa propicia para la sucesión de descubrimientos que hacen avanzar el caso. En paralelo, la novela trata temas como la lucha diaria que supone ser jefa en un sector masculinizado, así como las relaciones personales y familiares de la científica.

Aunque Scarpetta es anterior, la estructura narrativa y la historia en sí me han recordado a la saga de Temperance Brennan de Kathy Reichs (novelas en las que se basó la serie de Bones) cuya primera entrega «Déjà Dead» fue publicada en 1997.

No obstante, debido a la fama de la autora, esperaba una mayor riqueza a nivel de vocabulario. Me han sorprendido ciertas figuras literarias y expresiones que llaman la atención por su singularidad (lo que está bien) pero su repetición a lo largo de la obra le restan el efecto de su originalidad.

En general, la historia se ajusta al género a la perfección, con una protagonista con muchas capas por explotar y, al menos en este caso, una trama interesante que te mantendrá con los ojos pegados a sus páginas.

Published in 1990, Postmortem is the first instalment in the famous Kay Scarpetta series, which finally has a TV adaptation on Prime released in 2026.

The TV series draws part of its storyline from this first novel, which is told through the voice of Dr. Kay Scarpetta, Chief Medical Examiner of the city of Richmond. Written in the first person, the story is presented from the perspective of a protagonist narrator whose knowledge is limited to her own experiences, observations, and personal encounters.

From the very first chapter, we are taken to the scene of the third crime committed by a nocturnal serial killer whose victims are women with no apparent connection among them. This opening immediately gives the plot a sense of urgency, with a clear role of a professional woman who is deeply committed to her work while still embracing her most human side.

I had been wanting to read Cornwell for years and news of this TV series gave me the perfect excuse to stop by the library and bring it home.

The reading experience was not fast-paced but engaging, thanks to prose that perfectly suits the sequence of discoveries that move the investigation forward. At the same time, the novel explores themes such as the daily struggle of being a woman in charge within a male-dominated field, as well as the personal and family relationships of the scientist.

Although Scarpetta came earlier, both the narrative structure and the story itself reminded me of Kathy Reichs’ Temperance Brennan series, the novels that inspired the TV show Bones and whose first instalment, Déjà Dead, was published in 1997.

However, given the author’s reputation, I expected some how a greater richness in terms of vocabulary. I was surprised by certain literary expressions that stood out because of their originality (which is a good thing), but their repetition throughout the novel reduced their impact.

Overall, the story fits the genre perfectly, with a protagonist who still has many layers to explore and, at least in this case, a quite interesting and well developed plot that will keep your eyes glued to its pages.
